SCENE TYPE:    Drama

CHARACTERS:   
Sydney – female, 18 or older
Jack – male, 35 or older

ACTION:    Sydney visits her incarcerated father.

INT. CIA PRISONER'S HOLDING CELL

Jack Bristow sits in a chair. Unshaven, disheveled, his usually calm, composed demeanor is shattered.

A BUZZER sounds and Jack's eyes calmly float up to the window in expectation. FOOTSTEPS echo as the person approaches. Then Sydney appears, hesitant, fearful. She strides into view of Jack. The two silently stare at each other through the PLEXIGLAS. Sydney looks at him in frustrated sadness.

A flicker of sorrow and guilt weaken Jack's countenance. Then the coolness reappears. He stands and walks towards the window and by the time he arrives, he is the old Jack Bristow again. Focused on the task at hand. First and foremost.


JACK
When do you leave for Oslo?

Sydney looks at him incredulous, then-

SYDNEY
How did you-

JACK
I've been tracking this for some
time. I knew that Paulson wasn't
solely in charge of this-


SYDNEY
Dad, why didn't you tell me? I can
understand not thinking you'd get
approval and trying to avoid the red
tape, but why not tell me so that I
could help?


JACK
Because of where I'm standing right
now. Getting you in trouble would
get us both out of the loop. At
least you still have access, still
have a means of capturing Irina-


SYDNEY
But you've now crippled yourself.
Over a plan so stupid and
miscalculated. That's not like you.
They're talking about bringing you
up on charges. Sending you to prison-


JACK
Sydney-

SYDNEY
Dad, they could take you away
and I need you. Don't you understand?
I NEED you to help me with this.


Sydney nearly crumbles. She struggles to compose herself, looking away from Jack as he looks dead on at his daughter. The understanding registers on his face. He seems to falter, ready to crumble with her. But no. Focus on the business at hand.

JACK
Sydney. Listen to me.

Sydney reluctantly turns to face her father.


JACK (CONT'D)
When you get to Oslo, focus on the
doctor's files - not searching for
the heart.


Sydney looks at him perplexed.


SYDNEY
Why?

JACK
Because that's the intel that's
important.


SYDNEY
But how? Why?

JACK
Sydney! Just do it!

Sydney looks at her father. He's rattled, edgy, so close to the line. She doesn't know what to believe, what to think. Has he gone over the edge or-?


SYDNEY
Fine.

She turns and walks towards the gates. The buzzer sounds. She turns to look at her father one last time.
Jack watches from his cell. Sydney turns and leaves.

Jack is able to let his face fall. He turns around and walks back to his chair. He sits down and is finally able to register the regret and pain.
