Free Dramatic Monologue-BELLCAT & PIGBOY by Patsy Dickey
This free dramatic monologue-
BellCat & PigBoy
by Patsy Dickey-is a narration. Actors are often required to use narration skills, particularly in commercial voiceoverss.
Dramatic Monologues in Commercials
When you think of a "Fancy Feast" commercial, you hear the way Lauren Bacall almost purrs those words. George Clooney has tempted us to get thirsty with: "This is Budweiser. This is beer." And Allison Janney comfortingly lists the benefits of "Kaiser Permanente." Though these are narrations, they are still monologues.
These pieces still need to be performed with some thought of who is speaking and why. Questions of the character's motivation and conflict still need to be answered in order to give the words depth - especially if we don't get to see the face of the actor.
A narration like this one might also happen at the beginning of a film or play to set up the scene and circumstances. You, the actor, then become responsible for making us care about the characters we're being introduced to and curious about what will happen to them in the minutes to come.
Audition Tips for Narrators
Which brings us to the challenge of this piece. If you're in an audition, and handed a side like this one, how do you bring yourself to a monologue where (like the Narrator in OUR TOWN), you're more of an observer than a participant?
The power lies in making a strong choice about whose voice you really are. Are you Bell Cat? Pigboy? A best friend or parent of one or the other? A gossip? A reporter? A minister delivering a eulogy?
Try all of those choices (and some of your own) and see what works best for you as you experiment with the free dramatic monologue below.

BellCat & PigBoy
by Patsy Dickey
Way down in middle Georgia there are two old-South families who own the small town, and the county that bears its name.
It’s hot here in summer and almost all winter. That heat is sealed into the past and present; bone and temperament of the Barringtons and the Cleelands, and especially in the blood of their children.
Two of these heirs, Maribelle Barrington and Halford Cleeland are inherent playmates as children. But not for long.
World War II happens.
And now Cedarboro welcomes home her sons. A glorious Christmas ball on Washington Street, where the families live, reunites Hal Cleeland and Belle Barrington who are startled to rediscover one another after nearly two decades of growing up. The fire is reignited between these two beautiful, reckless and dominant figures. In spite of all tradition, totems and fine manners, the pair elopes.
The union of BellCat and PigBoy starts with the wild determination of two clueless young individuals to do exactly as they please.
